What Happens Now? | AMD GCN Drivers Tested
Comparing AMD’s past and recent driver revisions to see what the end of developer support means for owners of GCN 1, 2 and 3 cards regarding game compatibility and performance.
AMD have, in their “wisdom”, chosen to discontinue driver support for their popular GCN-based HD 7000, R 200 and R 300 series cards in the middle of a massive GPU shortage. The final official driver for these cards is Adrenalin WHQL 21.5.2, and is what AMD refer to as “legacy support”. This means the cards will continue to work with presently available games, but won’t receive performance or compatibility updates for new releases.
In this video, I aim to answer questions about what this might mean for owners, and whether it’s true that AMD had already stopped optimising drivers for these cards as much as two years ago!
